Editor’s Update 12:30 PM. The Everett Fire Department issued the following press release:Apartments Casino Road Everett Wa
Everett firefighters responded to an early morning fatal fire at the Parkside Apartments, located in the 900 block of West Casino Road, shortly after midnight. The two-alarm fire claimed the life of one male and a cat.Initial callers to 9-1-1 reported hearing an alarm and seeing smoke coming from the building. Arriving fire crews identified a second-story apartment unit the smoke was coming from and established offensive operations to fight the fire.
Upon forcing entry into the apartment, firefighters found heavy thick smoke in the unit and a mattress fire in the bedroom. During the search of the unit, an unresponsive adult male was located in the apartment. Life-saving measures were performed at the scene but were unsuccessful.
An Everett Fire investigator was called to the scene. Preliminary information suggests that a cigarette may have caused the mattress fire; however, the fire is still under investigation. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office has taken custody of the deceased to determine the cause and manner of death and establish identity. Mutual aid was provided by South Snohomish County Fire and Rescue, Mukilteo Fire, Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue, and NAS Everett.
If you or someone in your home is a smoker, the Everett Fire Department recommends the following safety tips to help prevent a home fire:
Smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires that started in living rooms, family rooms, or bedrooms.
Never smoke in bed or when you are drowsy, intoxicated, or medicated.
Use large, deep, non-tip ashtrays to prevent ashes from spilling onto furniture.
Completely douse cigarette butts and ashes with water before throwing them away.
Never smoke where an oxygen tank is in use.
Keep lighters and matches out of reach of young children, preferably in a locked cabinet.
Don’t leave cigarettes, cigars or pipes unattended.
Have working smoke alarms and test them monthly
